I committed three years to systematically testing skincare routines. Twelve different approaches, three months each. Honest evaluation of what produced measurable change in my skin and what didn't. Here's the honest report.

What worked

1. Simple consistent routine with proven actives. The routine I settled into: gentle cleanser, vitamin C serum (morning), retinol (evening, alternating days), basic moisturizer, broad-spectrum SPF. Used consistently for over a year. Produced measurable improvement in skin texture, tone, and resilience.

Why it worked: the active ingredients have decades of research behind them. The simplicity made consistency possible.

2. Sunscreen daily, religiously. The single most-impactful skincare practice I tested. Started using broad-spectrum SPF daily five years ago. The cumulative effect on my skin has been substantial.

Why it worked: sun damage is among the largest contributors to skin aging. Preventing it is the most-effective anti-aging intervention available.

3. Patient consistency over routine elaboration. Routines I sustained for 6+ months produced visible results. Routines I changed every few weeks produced nothing.

What didn't work

4. Elaborate 10-step Korean-inspired routines. Tested for several months. Too time-intensive to sustain. The basic actives produced equivalent results without the time investment.

5. Very expensive luxury skincare. Tested several premium brands. The results weren't proportional to the cost. Mid-range proven products produced equivalent results at fraction of cost.

6. Trendy individual products without proven evidence. Tested numerous products marketed for specific dramatic results. Most produced no measurable benefit.

7. Routines built around social media advice. Frequent routine changes based on viral trends produced inconsistent skin and no sustained improvement.

The general lesson

Skincare works through consistent application of proven actives over months and years. Elaborate routines, premium products, and trendy approaches mostly produce noise rather than results.

What I now do

The simple routine sustained across years. Vitamin C and SPF in morning. Retinol most evenings. Basic moisturizer. Cleanser. That's it.

The simplicity is the key. Anything more elaborate isn't sustainable; anything less doesn't produce results.

The takeaway

Skincare results come from sustained simple practice with proven actives. The complicated approaches produce less than the simple ones for most people.

For your own routine, prioritize consistency over elaboration. The boring practices produce the visible results.
