Hair products have been a particular area of testing across years. Some products genuinely improved my hair; many didn't. Six that earned permanent place, plus three categories I've stopped using.

The 6 that work

1. Sulfate-free shampoo (specific to my hair type). Took years of testing to find the right formulation. Once I did, the difference in my hair quality was substantial.

2. Deep conditioner used weekly. Not daily conditioner. Once-weekly deep treatment. Produces consistent improvement when sustained.

3. Heat protectant. Used before any heat styling. The damage prevention is real and visible over time.

4. Leave-in conditioner. Daily use after washing. Works as detangler and moisturizer.

5. Hair oil for ends. Small amount daily on dry ends. Prevents damage that builds up otherwise.

6. Microfiber towel. Less aggressive than regular towels. Reduces frizz and breakage.

This combination supports healthy hair without elaborate routine.

The 3 I've stopped

1. Most "growth" treatments. Tested several products marketed for hair growth. None produced measurable difference. The natural hair growth rate is the natural hair growth rate; products don't accelerate it meaningfully.

2. Daily heat styling tools. Reduced from daily blowdrying and flat-ironing to occasional. Hair quality improved substantially. The damage from daily heat exceeds what most people realize.

3. Frequent salon treatments. Tested keratin treatments, smoothing treatments, etc. Short-term improvement followed by faster damage. The long-term cost outweighs the short-term benefit.

The general lesson

Hair health responds to gentle treatment and consistent care. The aggressive treatments produce short-term results with long-term costs.

The takeaway

Six products and gentle daily care produce healthy hair more reliably than elaborate treatment routines. The simplicity is the key.

For your own hair, evaluate what's actually serving you. The aggressive treatments may be costing more than they're providing.
